A Name Carried Through Generations

The name Huia holds a very special place in my heart.

Inspired by one of Aotearoa’s most treasured taonga, Huia also honours my own whakapapa. My grandmother carried Huia as her middle name - a name that has always represented beauty, strength and connection for me.

Even in her later years, I remember my grandmother having the most beautifully soft, smooth skin. She carried a quiet grace and elegance that stayed with me long after. She became part of the inspiration behind creating Huia - a brand centred on caring for ourselves and embracing simple, meaningful beauty rituals.

Inspired by a Treasured Taonga

The Huia bird was renowned for its striking black feathers with a beautiful green iridescent sheen - a natural elegance reflected in the luxurious texture and subtle lustre of silk.

For Māori, huia feathers were highly treasured and held deep cultural significance. They symbolised mana, prestige and respect, and were worn with great reverence.

Although the Huia bird is no longer with us, its beauty, rarity and legacy continue to inspire and remind us to treasure the things that are truly precious.

The Huia Ritual
